The Roulette Wheel
What is “The Roulette Wheel”?

Oxford's English Dictionary explains the word “roulette” as “a gambling game with ball dropped on revolving numbered wheel”. Roulette wheels are of two types:

American Roulette Wheel: Comprising 38 partitions from 0 to 36 and a double zero (00). Gives house edge of 5.26%. That is, for every $1 bet you get 52 cents profit.

European Roulette Wheel: Comprising 37 partitions from 0 to 36. House edge in this case is 2.7%. Thus, for every $1 bet you get 27 cents.

Calculation of roulette odds:

European System :- (35-36)/37 X 100 = -2.70% American System :- (37-37)/38 X 100 = -5.26%

The set up of ‘The Roulette Wheel' has a rotating wheel and the Roulette table layout.

The wheel consists of 37 pockets (for European system) numbered in an unordered format. Half of these numbers have black while other half has red background. The number zero is assigned green background. These colors play a significant role in the game.

The roulette table layout is a game layout table where all bets are placed. This table consists of a horizontal table having 36 numbers (3 numbers in one row) thereby making it 12 rows horizontal rows and 3 vertical columns. Adjoining the number table are various segments according to the rules of the game.

These are:

0 (or 00): Just above the 1st row (containing 1, 2 and 3). Define the house edge(s).

Dozen segment: A column with 3 rows at the left outside of number table. Divides table in 3 parts viz., 1st dozen (1-12), 2nd dozen (13-24) and 3rd dozen (25 to 36).

Column bet segment: A row with 3 columns adjoining the last row in the number table (containing 34, 35, 36). Each column of this segment represents a column in the number table and marked 2:1.

Others: On the left side of the dozen's row is another row in following format:

1-18 Even B R Odd 19-36

1-18: lower numbers of the game

Even: all even numbers in range of 0-36

B: numbers with black background on the roulette wheel

R: numbers with red background on the roulette wheel

Odd: all odd numbers in range of 0-36

19-36: higher numbers of the game

This table is the real betting area. Bets placed on the table decide the future of the game.

How to play the Roulette Wheel

1st step in this direction will be to buy chips from the dealer (at the roulette table itself). The chips will be worth the same amount each (e.g., $1). Now ready to play. You will be asked to place your bets at the roulette table. After all the bets are placed, the dealer will rotate the wheel in counterclockwise direction and spun a small rolling ball in opposite direction. After sometime, the ball will lose its momentum and settle into a pocket. The number of the pocket will be the “winning number” influencing all the bets placed at the roulette table.

However, before anything, you must have a clear idea about the bets and tricks to play with them.

Type of roulette bets

A bet can be of various types, it can be on some number, any 4 adjacent numbers, any 4 adjacent numbers, a column or a dozen's bet (1-12, 13-24, 25-36).

Now cross your fingers and get ready to be a winner of “the Roulette Wheel”.
